“Do not be swayed by the voices of reason, for where you must go, reason cannot follow..." Menalor, Draca of Albradan.
Illiom does not know who she is.
All she knows is that she harbours an ability that terrifies her. Once, in self-defence, she blinded a man who had meant her harm. To this day she does not understand how that even happened. There is a power lurking inside of her, but without understanding and some measure of control, this power could easily prove lethal, especially in a society phobic about magic.
So Illiom lives alone, far from others, lonely in a way that only someone like her can understand. Unseen, unrecognised, unloved, she lives in a place of harsh and unforgiving beauty, waiting for a change that may never come.
But, of course, change never fails to come...
For Illiom it arrives in the form of Tarmel, a Rider of the Queen's Black Ward, who bears a summons that forces her out of her self-imposed isolation and onto a journey into the heart of mystery itself.
